A fulfilling later life is about much more than financial security. Having a sense of purpose, staying active and, perhaps most importantly, maintaining meaningful connections with other people can all play an important part in our wellbeing.
That’s one of the reasons we’re proud to support the local bowls community.
In July, Harold Stephens was delighted to sponsor the annual Portishead Ladies Triples competition, bringing together 24 teams from across Somerset, Bristol and Gloucestershire for a day of friendly competition and, just as importantly, connection.
I spent time chatting to those attending and asking what being part of the bowls community meant to them. The answers were a wonderful reminder of the important role local clubs can play in people's lives.

The day was about far more than what happened on the green. Between the matches, there was lunch, tea and plenty of cake, with friends catching up and sharing stories about their summer so far.
For many, these regular opportunities to see familiar faces and meet new people are an important part of their week.
“When I moved to town, I didn’t know anyone. Joining the local bowls club gave me more than a new hobby - it gave me a community, lasting friendships, and a real sense of belonging. As one club, with our ladies and men united, we have a wonderful opportunity this year to be even more inclusive and continue welcoming new people into our bowls family.” Debbie Brenton, Portishead Bowls Club
One conversation particularly highlighted just how valuable these communities can be during times of change. I heard the story of a woman who had recently lost her husband. For many years, her hobbies had been the hobbies they had enjoyed together, and she had few interests that were uniquely her own. Finding bowls gave her the opportunity to discover something new - a welcoming community where she could meet people, build new friendships and begin to find her own identity and enjoyment in this new stage of life.
Stories like this demonstrate why community spaces matter. Clubs aren't simply places to take part in an activity. They can provide friendship, routine and a sense of belonging - something that can become particularly important when life changes or circumstances shift.
Sadly, several bowls clubs around Bristol have closed in recent years. For the people who relied on them, this has been a real blow, removing not only somewhere to play but also an important source of regular social contact and companionship.
This is why we feel it is so important to support the clubs and events that continue to bring people together.
I recently volunteered as a trustee at Canford Bowling Club, helping to enable it to become a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC), support the club's longevity and secure its future for the local community. We hope the Club will become a vibrant hub for the community, providing an accessible space to meet and enjoy connecting with others, whether that’s on the bowls green or taking part in an activity or group in the club house.
Harold Stephens is also proud to sponsor local Bristol clubs and tournaments, helping to maintain the facilities and opportunities that allow these communities to continue.
Sponsoring events like the Portishead Ladies Triples competition feels particularly meaningful when you can see the impact happening right in front of you. Twenty-four teams coming together, enjoying some light-hearted competition, and simply spending time with friends old and new - these are the connections that make communities stronger.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are currently taking place in Glasgow and bowls features as one of just 10 sports! There is a fantastic opportunity for more people to discover what makes the sport so special. The 'Big Bowls Summer' campaign is encouraging people across the country to give bowls a try, with clubs offering opportunities for newcomers to get involved.
If you’re interested in trying bowls locally, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. Sometimes, finding a new hobby can mean finding a new community, and perhaps even a new chapter in life.
